Nursing Internships/Residency

The Prosper Nurse Residency Program is designed to facilitate a smooth transition for new graduate nurses into their role as a licensed nurse. The program was developed to educate and empower new nurses as they begin their professional practice.

Program Highlights

The nurse residency program at MCH is 6 months long and is comprised of structured lectures, simulation-based learning, hands-on training, case studies, and discussions, to promote critical thinking skills and professional development. All graduate nurses are paired with an experienced preceptor to help guide them into their professional practice at the bedside during the orientation to their specific unit. Precepted time varies depending on the particular area of employment.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible, you must meet both of the following criteria*:

  • Graduation from an accredited nursing program within the last year
  • Completion of fewer than months of acute care nursing experience

*Special circumstances, such as lack of acute care experience, will be evaluated individually.

Application Process

There is not a separate application for the residency program. Once hired, all new graduate nurses at MCH are automatically enrolled into the program if eligibility requirements are met. Graduate nurses will begin the program in the cohort closest to their start date. To apply for a nursing position, please refer to the Careers page.

Background

In the 2010 Institute of Medicine (IOM)/Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) Future of Nursing report, a gap was identified in the role transition from nursing student to professional practice. The report called for residency programs for all new nurse graduates. Residency programs have been identified to help the transition process by decreasing anxiety, stress, and turnover while increasing confidence and critical thinking skills among new nurse graduates.
