Magnetic Resonance Imaging

MRI w-patient 4C.jpg (12188 bytes) Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a very advanced medical imaging technique which produces very clear pictures or images of the human body. Using powerful magnetic fields, radio waves and computer, MRI provides an excellent way to diagnose diseases of the brain, spine, chest, abdomen, bones, joints, pelvis and blood vessels.

Medical Center Hospital provides two MRI units in the outpatient facility. Both units employ "short bore" technology to maximize patient comfort, especially for claustrophobic patients.  Music through headphones is available to make the experience more pleasant.

MRI can not be performed on patients who have pacemakers.   If you have had brain aneurysm clips we will need further information to determine if the MRI can be performed.

The MRI units at Medical Center are capable of providing MR Angiography.  MR Angiography is a study of arteries and veins in the brain and/or body without the need for invading the artery.

The MRI technologists at Medical Center Hospital have received certification from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists to perform MRI.   To receive certification a technologist must document training and pass a national exam specific to MRI.  The technologist works closely with the radiologist to assure the most accurate result from your examination.

To perform your procedure the technologist will ask you to lie down on a cushioned table.  A devise called a "coil" will be placed over you or under you.  It is specialized to produce the clearest picture of the area it is placed around.  When you are comfortably positioned, the table will move through the magnet.  The technologist will then step in the control area, while staying in constant contact with you both visually and through the intercom.

As the exam proceeds, you will hear a muffled thumping sound for several minutes at a time.  Relax and lie as still as possible.    Any movement during this time will blur the picture.  Other than the sound, the MRI creates no body sensation and is probably one of the easiest and most comfortable exams you may ever experience.  Be prepared to follow breathing instructions if needed.

Outpatient MRI is available during the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.  A written physician's order and an appointment are required for an MRI procedure.  Appointments can be scheduled by calling (432) 640-1801.  Should you have questions about your specific MRI exam, our technologists are glad to provide you with the information.  You may reach the MRI Department at (432) 640-1815.
