What the Spirit of Nursing Means to Me
Ryan O. Baldomero, MSN, RN, CNS, APRN-BC

Nursing is as fundamental as touch and as noble as self sacrifice. The meaning of Nursing breathes through the Nightingale’s pledge which exemplifies the Nurse’s life- my life - to a dedication of calling.

“I solemnly pledge myself before God and in the presence of this assembly, to pass my life in purity and to practice my profession faithfully.”

…I view Nursing as love. The love I have for myself as an extension to others through advocacy and empathy. The very same love as expressed by celebrating uniqueness and acknowledging respect of individual capacities.  A love that braids trust on my fellow nurses, develops loyalty to my clients, and establishes fidelity to my work. A love for life- intricate, delicate and real! With my eyes, I see the true vision of Nursing as love.

“I will abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous, and will not take or knowingly administer any harmful drug.”

…I see Nursing as conscientious. Nursing conscience embodies prudent, equal and ethical care. The very same conscience fosters humility, provides security and protection to the lives that are entrusted to my stead. A growing Nursing conscience supports the mastery of skills and attitude, and, bridges the gap between the right actions and thought. Through my senses, I define nursing as conscientious.

“I will do all in my power to maintain and elevate the standard of my profession, and will hold in confidence all personal matters committed to my keeping and all family affairs coming to my knowledge in the practice of my calling.”

… Nursing is passion. A passion to learn and to continue to grow. The passion to utilize evidence based practice in the pursuit of better patient outcomes. Passion that drives the understanding of humanity as it adapts to an ever changing environment. The very same passion that connects best practices to customer satisfaction. From acknowledging silence to the alleviation of pain and suffering – for me, Nursing is passion.

“With loyalty will I endeavor to aid the physician, in his work, and devote myself to the welfare of those committed to my care.”

…Nursing is an assertive part of a team. A team that emulates the dignity of life in a continuum of care.  A team that set aside individual differences and move toward collegiality and collaboration. A team that focuses on strengths and works on weaknesses. Nursing is part of a team- a team that puts patient’s first.

Nursing dynamically evolves over time. However defined, as an art and as a science, one thing will always remain: to me, the meaning of Nursing exudes a calling and is more than a profession. Nursing is a dedication and a pledge to patients- the beneficiaries of our care.
