Outpatient SurgeryOutpatient Surgery

Opened in May 2004, the Dr. Wheatley Stewart Medical Pavilion houses state-of-the-art Outpatient Surgery operating rooms and Endoscopy Labs. The units are both located on the second floor, conveniently close and connected to the main hospital OR via skybridge. Employing over 39 full-time nurses, surgical technologists and support staff, the Outpatient Surgical Services department performs an average of 600 surgical and endoscopy procedures per month.

Patients are received into the Day Surgery Unit pre-op holding area where they are admitted and prepared for their procedures. Outpatient Surgery has operating suites complete with Storz OR1 boom-mounted equipment and digital, flat panel monitors. The suites have large windows and are also computerized with nursing control of equipment from a workstation. There are 4 endoscopy suites also equipped with boom-mounted, flat panel monitors, as well as new Olympus 180 series scopes and video processors. The physicians utilize the Olympus EndoWorks image capture and reporting system. A new motorized travel cart system is equipped with the same technology as each endo suite, allowing the same standard of care to be delivered at any location throughout the hospital. The unit also has a new Sandhill Scientific esophageal motility study system as well as the PillCam for small bowel studies.

All patients, whether Endoscopy Lab or Outpatient Surgery, are recovered by our competent team of nurses in the Day Surgery Unit post-op recovery area. All Surgical Services departments utilize the McKesson HSM electronic medical record, and there is an Informatics Manager on site 5 days per week.

Hear it from the ones who know...

“This unit is the best place I have ever worked.  I love my co-workers.  We are a team.  We all help each other.  I love my hours and the environment I am in.  I don’t think I would like it better anywhere else.”  Araceli Lopez, RN, 8 years

“Working in Endo Lab allows me to utilize my CNA skills on a daily basis.  Plus, I am able to continue my education in the nursing program.”  Maria Loya, Endo Tech, 14 years
