Am I a Candidate for Weight Loss Surgery?

If someone you love is obese, you already know how damaging it can be. Excess weight impacts your heath your self-esteem and your relationships. People with obesity are also at greater risk conditions such as sleep apnea, diabetes and heart problems.

When diet and exercise aren’t working, it may seem like there is no hope. But at Medical Center Hospital Bariatric Clinic, we specialize in providing an alternative for the care and treatment of obesity, Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass Surgery and Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding, or the LAP-Band® system.

If you are considering the decision to undergo weight loss surgery, you’ll want to educate yourself on these life-changing procedures. We’re here to answer all your questions and to determine whether you’re a candidate for weight loss surgery.

Medical Center Bariatric Clinic specializes in the treatment of obesity through state-of-the-art surgical procedures and a comprehensive education program. If you are at least 75-100 pounds overweight you may be a candidate for our weight loss surgery program.

Your overall success, heath and safety are the most important considerations for us. That’s why we consider the following guidelines to determine whether you are an appropriate candidate for surgery:

Age - Although ideal candidates for weight loss surgery are commonly between the ages of 18 and 50 years old, certain heath conditions may make it an appropriate option for others.

Mature Patients, over 60 - Patients over age 60 do face special risks for any surgery procedures. Therefore, we evaluate these patients on a case by case basis, determining overall heath and risk factors. After a thorough analysis of your completed new patient packet, we will decide weather you are an appropriate candidate.

Smoking/tobacco use - We do not accept patients who smoke or use nicotine in any form. If you currently smoke or use nicotine products, you will need to quit prior to applying to our program. We may ask you to confirm this through a urine nicotine screening test in order protect your heath.

Prior Weight Loss Surgery – Patients who have already had a procedure for weight loss surgery are not qualified to be candidates for surgery at Medical Center Hospital Bariatric Clinic.

Obesity By Body Mass Index (BMI) - Physicians and healthcare professionals commonly use the BMI as a way of helping to determine obesity. BMI is a number calculated by dividing a person’s weight in kilograms by his or her height in square meters. Although a patient’s BMI cannot be used to determine actual percentage of body fat or overall health condition, it is a means of categorizing weight in terms of nationally recognized standards. These standards are based on the probability of whether or not a person will be healthy or unhealthy as they age. Typically, patients considered for weight loss surgery are in the morbidly or super obese categories.

Body Mass Index Standards
• BMI 18.5 to 24.9 Healthy
• BMI 25-29.9 Overweight
• BMI 30-39.9 Obese
• BMI 40-49.9 Morbidly Obese
• BMI 50 or higher Super Obese

BMI is only one of many factors the team at Medical Center Hospital Bariatric Clinic considers in determining whether or not a patient is a good candidate for weight loss surgery.
